From the East

Years I have listened, gazed toward the Eastern wall.
Under the Large letter "G", he sits; delivers
words of wisdom, quotes ancient passages,
speaks symbolically, states direct questions,
delivers guidance and presents commands,
an adorn-er of praises.
In return, respect, admiration and compassion
flow from all direction.

Today, a difference prevails.
It is with my eyes that greet from the East.
In a nervous awe, the room opens up,
a much grander view than expected.
Faces from every direction stare back with
patience. I sense a respectful radiance
fill the room.

Time commands that I must speak ancient words
of passages and rituals. But will they come
out correctly with the sincerity
that I have enjoyed from the past?
Think   think   be calm.
Articulate, for all eyes and ears are focused
on the East with anticipation.

I feel the Cherry-wood mallet in hand.
A solid feel of warmth - go on, slam it!
With unwielding control, my arm muscle flexes,
the crack echoes, pierces my ears, my heart flinches,
yet a curtain of silence engrosses.
Mouth opens    words start to vibrate
into decibels that reflect off the four walls.

The long hand on the West wall, clicks in notches.
Like a sunrise, preparation efforts peak forth.
I have now opened and closed an Ancient Fraternity.
Satisfaction washes over me
—historic values    pride.
